What is a Migrane?
Migraines are a debilitating type of headache, usually throbbing or pulsing in nature and accompanied with a variety of physical symptoms such as nausea or visual symptoms known as an aura. They usually occur on one side of the head (hemi-cranial) and can last from a couple of hours to a few days.
What are the Different Types of Migranes?

Migraines are usually accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances.
Migraines affect nearly 1 billion people worldwide with women three times as likely to be affected as men.
Migraines are a common cause of undiagnosed headaches in children and affect boys and girls equally until puberty. Studies from the National Migraine Center suggest that around 60% of children between 7-15 experience headaches.

Migranes & Upper Cervical Chiropractic
Although the exact neurology of migraines is yet to be fully understood, trauma to the head and neck, such as whiplash, has been identified as contributing factors to migraines of varying degrees of severity.
Trauma to the head and neck can cause vertebrae in the upper cervical spine to misalign, putting pressure on the soft tissue structures and, more importantly, the nervous system. Pressure on the nervous system will impact and inhibit neurological signals from the brain to the body and vice versa, resulting in varying degrees of neurological symptoms such as migraines.

Study to Support
A study from the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research (2020) looked at the effect of upper cervical chiropractic care on a 53-year-old female with a 12-year history of migraines. Results showed that specific upper cervical adjustments were beneficial to this patient experiencing migraines, neck pains, and headaches.
More research is required in this area, however, there seems to be a strong correlation between the misalignment of the upper cervical spine as a cause of migraine episodes.
