Migraine Headaches and Upper Cervical Chiropractic
Symproms of Migraine Headaches
In the UK, migraine headaches affect almost 15% of the population, with three times more women affected than men.
Migraines symptoms range from light sensitivity to dizziness, to one-sided body weakness and nausea. Symptoms can last from one - two days, to extreme cases of over a week. Similarly, frequency can vary from a one-off incident triggered by a stressful event to occurrences so frequent that make it almost impossible to live a normal life.
While many people find that migraines can be triggered by specific foods and food combinations (e.g. red wine and cheese) smells, stress, tiredness or the mensural cycle, these factors don’t explain the severity of the symptoms.
Causes Of Migraine Headaches
The exact cause of migraines is unknown, although they are thought to be the result of temporary changes in the chemicals, nerves and blood supply which flow to and from the brain. These structures all pass through the upper-cervical spine.
Migraine Headaches Treatments
At Top Chiropractic we look at the alignment of the upper-cervical spine and correct any misalignments to allow optimal function of the spine, nervous system and the associated structures.
This area of the spine can become misaligned for a number of reasons including traumas such as sports injuries, car accidents and falls, to prolonged poor posture/work position.
This misalignment can lead to structural and neurological dysfunction which can play a role in severity and frequency of migraines.
We have seen that when we make upper-cervical corrections, they can have a hugely positive effect on reducing the symptoms associated with migraine headaches.
Misalignment of the upper-cervical spine also impacts other body systems; please check out our other blog posts for more information.
